Hello all,
In the last 6 months I have put on 35 pounds. I know I need to cut my consumption and become more active. I own a store, and times get hard and I find I am eating a lot. Maybe for comfort. I also supplement my store's income by internet sales, which means I am in front of the computer for long periods of time. Boredom, frustration, I am finding I am always looking for something to eat now. I want to try to curb my dependancy on nibbling. One thing I thought was to drink water whenever I felt the urge to eat. It would serve as an appetite suppresant. I try to take at least one 20 minute walk a day. I do not have much free/personal time to do much more. I walk in the morning, and if I can, I try to take a walk in the evening as well. I feel like I am not going to be able to get the weight off quickly. I don't want to take a year to get the weight off. Six months even seems too long. I know that lifestyle change is going to be a big part of my success, but is there anything else that can help me burn the fat off?

Wed, July 2, 2008 - 12:44 PMWhat you are describing has been outlined in two of my favorite authorities: Ancient Ayurveda, and Dr. Atkins, better known for the Atkins diet. Weight gain, according to Ayurveda, has to do with the Meda dhatu (fat tissue) becoming over fed, and by this they mean that the other tissues are being under fed. This is the reason the fat tissue is also referred to as the greedy tissue, because it will take food before any of the other tissues. One of the reasons for this is that it also supports the other tissues in times of scarcity (of food and nutrients). So the first thing to get into the mind when considering weight loss, is that fat is not your enemy.
Once you have that, the other part of the theory will be easier to digest. In order for the fat tissue to regain its normalcy, it's digestive capacity (agni) needs to be squelched to a degree. The way that this is done is to feed the body heavy, dense foods, and this usually means things which are very oily. This overpowers the agni of the fat tissue so that the other tissues may start to build up their own. So one way to look at it is that the goal is to hinder the fat tissue's digestion, but another way to see it is that you need to nourish the other tissues.
This part of the theory is supported by the Atkins view. Many people misinterpret the actual theory behind Atkins, and try to eat a diet high in protein. This is the exactly wrong thing to do. The body goes through a heirarchical system when it comes to deciding what parts of food to utilize. The very first thing that body goes after is carbohydrates. When carbs are consumed and not used for energy, then they get stored in lipid form (fat) for later use. If there are no carbs in the diet then the body goes to burn fats, and if there are none of those it digests protein for energy. If there is not enough protein in the diet, in the latter scenario, then the body cannibalizes the proteins of the body (like the muscles) for food. Fats are an incredible source of energy, more so than carbohydrates actually, and when somebody is running on fats, it is referred to as being in a ketonic state (burning keytone, which are energy units of fat). This is the goal of the Atkins diet, and so the real trick is to eliminate carbs, increase fats , and maintain a protein intake.
The other factor in diet change is hunger bouts. What you are experiencing is what is referred to in Ayurveda as false hunger. It is a situation in which the heat of Pitta rises and stimulates the glands and organs of hunger, thereby creating the sense that it is time to eat. This overactive Pitta will eventually calm down on it's own, especially if Pitta calming medicines are taken at the same time (such as licorice, mint, hibiscus, vetiver, and solomon's seal (this one in particular is an appetite regulator). Also the addition of bitter foods into your diet help to both calm down Pitta, and control the appetite. Snacking is the biggest enemy of any diet plan, so choose snacks which are satisfying to the body, like fruit, occasionally almonds, jerky (fish or beef or poultry). One chinese snack, which works amazingly well if you like the taste of fish, is a dried scallop.
Drinking water is actually a great idea, it is the single most cohesive element I have experienced in any and all dietary regimens I have experienced. However, you should keep in mind that drinking excessive amounts of water will actually lead to a depletion, which is alright for a time if you are trying to lose weight. Think of it as a river running through you, eroding the surrounding landscape. In order for the body to absorb water, it has to digest it, and in order to to that it has to have an amount of material dissolved in it for it to be recognized as food. I always recommend for people who are dehydrated, yet drinking tons of water, a pinch of salt (not enough to taste, or to drink a weak tea of hibiscus or rose hips or manjistha).

Mon, October 27, 2008 - 10:58 PMPerhaps you should try to turn your awareness inwardly and ask yourself why your feeling the need to constantly eat. The root of overeating is very often in the mind/emotions. You can surely take the necessary steps to balance your self physiologically, however, if your mind/emotions are not nurtured or understood, your body will will be thrown into a cycle of perpetual imbalance. Essential to Ayurveda, is understanding and addressing the root of an issue.
I would not suggest taking in very heavy or fatty foods until you have the opportunity to have yourself diagnosed (pulse, tongue, ect.) by an Ayurvedic Practitioner, so that they may ascertain (with positivity) your digestive capacity and current state of health. Otherwise, I'm afraid you could actually do more harm than good.

Think of food as medicine, and what we could eat at 20, 30, 40 changes with the shift of time. There might be food allergy as the boy changes, or psychi stalemate, when the future seems hard to walk, or that weight protects you, holds you, and you might need holding. By whom? afterthoughts- 2 liters of water a day- wake up and walk for 15 minutes- everyday_- jump the lymphatic emphatically! and take computer free days- let the mind wander and dream Ask questions, meditate and listen for response. Cut all fat- and way back on carbs- sweet is not sweet, except a littler honey. Om -

Tue, November 11, 2008 - 7:42 AMHello, yes, I have been away for awhile. Thank you for your replies. I had a store that was consuming all of my energy. I was working night and day to hold it together. I was eating all the time to make myself feel better I guess. Now, I have lost my store. Which is a good thing. It was too tough during this economy and the best thing to do is put it away and let it hibernate until things get better and I have time to digest and think through all I have learned with my small business. Anyway, I was eating lots of sweets. Cookies, candies...also fat fried food like chips. I used to eat pretty healthy, but because I was overwhelmed by work, I was taking shortcuts and seeking fast boosts and comfort. I am working from home now on my website, and now that the business overhead has dropped, I do not seem to be finding myself stuffing my mouth all the time. I have dropped 4 lbs so far. I am trying to retrain myself to stock my kitchen with lots of fruits and similar healthy snacks so that when I feel the need to nibble, it is going to be beneficial. BTW I am 41 years old. Another emotional trial I am going through is that I was in a relationship for 4 years with someone I am still very much in love with and it is over. It has been almost two months and my heart is still so full of pain. And as I am building my website, there is the transition of starting over with my business and making enough revenue for now to get by until things really pick up. So I guess I am an emotional eater and these days emotions seem to be running high. And the sweeter and unhealthier, the more I crave it like a drug. But like I was trying to say, I am trying to retrain my tastebuds.
I drink a lot of water and am trying to get out everyday for a walk. I cannot run or jog, I do not enjoy it, but I do enjoy walking and it also gives me time to clear my head. I find the walking to be not only good exercise, but good for my mental health. Thanks for all of your feedback. It all makes a lot of sense. I know there is no miracle fast way to lose weight, but my self esteem is down now that I have put all this on and it feels like facing a huge mountain to climb to try to get it off. -

Starches and processed food increase weight and acidify the system, fruits and vegetables alkalize the blood and don't add weight as easily, foods with bitter astringent and pungent tastes are particularly beneficial. certain stringent herbs are great as well, take Triphala churna.

Someone sent me the following words of wisdom in an email today, and when I just read your post....I thought to pass it on to you.
Emotional Management
Emotions are from the subconscious. They are powerful, yet difficult to manage. Why? When we become emotional, we are not reasoning very well; it is as if the emotional mind takes over and has its own mind. When you think wrongly, you can correct your thinking, but when you feel wrongly, it is very difficult to correct your feelings.
The eternal battle of lower mind and higher mind
The instinctive, emotional mind in us is termed the "lower mind". It holds a large part of our being. It is also the storehouse of our past experiences and our karmas. It is meant to be guided by our conscious mind in our journey of evolution towards higher consciousness. Yet, here lies the difficulty. Our thinking is often ruled by our emotions. Our thinking, or intellect, is not able to govern the lower mind. It gives up and instinct takes over.
In which way does the practice of Yoga help?
The practice of Yoga is the practice of Self Discipline and the practice of Awareness. Starting with our body and our breath, we slowly develop control and awareness over our lower mind. We become aware of our conditioning, fears, attachments, compulsions, resistances and impurities.
How does this work?
The process is called Purification. The practice of Yoga asanas, pranayama, proper diet, positive thinking and meditation help us to take care of our body, and release us from the grip of our physically ingrained habits, bad posture, and habitually negative thinking. As the body is connected to the breath and to the mind, the practice of Yoga help at the same time to calm the emotional subconscious mind and give clarity and strength to our higher mind. Re-train you mind with good feelings such as joy, love, hope, peace, self confidence and faith, replace negative feelings such as fear and worry, sadness and depression, hopelessness, hatred, isolation, anger and resentment.
